October Breast Cancer Awareness Month

As many of you may know October is National Breast Cancer awareness month.  Breast cancer is a serious condition. Aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. It is also one of the leading causes of cancer death among women of all races.  One woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes, and one woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes in the U.S.

If you do anything this month, get screened: schedule your mammogram, do self-breast examinations and yearly breast examination by your doctor. You can still get involved with Susan G. Komen Race for the cure. You can also check out their local affiliate in Indianapolis that has year around events and other ways to get involved around the Indianapolis area. You can also check out other foundations such as National Breast Cancer Foundation, the American Cancer Society, Young Survival Coalition of Central Indiana, Sisters Network, Inc., Pink-4-Ever, Inc., and Indiana Women In Need (I.W.I.N.) Foundation are just a few that you can check out.

Also, you can support Breast cancer awareness and research through buying items that have the Pink Ribbon that are sold to help support breast cancer research by donating a portion of the proceeds to breast cancer charities. If you want to support breast cancer research by purchasing some pink products or merchandise this October, there are a few questions you should ask to make sure that your purchase counts:

  • What organization is the company supporting? You can check on the manufacturer’s Web site or by calling their consumer hotline.
  • How are the funds being raised? You may have to do an additional step besides just purchasing the item.
  • What portion of your purchase will be donated? The item may say ”a portion of the proceeds” will be donated. You can check the company’s website for this information or call their hotline.
  • What is the maximum amount that will be donated? Some companies have a cap on their donation.
